tag_closeup Former Frisco Diamond

Just north of downtown New Albany, the Gulf Mobile & Northern mainline crossed the St Louis—San Francisco "Frisco" mainline at a 90 degree diamond. The crossing survived through the Illinois Central Gulf era, but was removed by previous shortline Mississippi Tennessee Railroad in the mid 2000s. Today the Burlington Northern Santa Fe trackage offers no evidence of a previous diamond. Ripley & New Albany trackage now ends 100' north of the diamond site. As of 2020, former ICG rails can still be seen in Railroad Avenue south of the diamond site. Below Highway 78 running through downtown a block to the south, the old GM&N right of way is now the 40 mile Tanglefoot walking trail.

tag_quote

Ripley is a small town with big vision, with a population over 5,000 residents nestled in the southern area of the Appalachian foothills in northern Mississippi. Located along Highway 15 in Tippah County, it is about thirty miles from the birthplace of Elvis Presley and sixty minutes from Graceland. Ripley is home to many shops from trendy to mom and pops, and has the modest distinction of having First Monday, one of the oldest outdoor Flea Market venues in the nation! Spectacular hill country scenery surrounds the city, and a number of inspiring historical homes are located in the downtown area. One can take advantage of seeing some of the great architectural designs from a range of time periods simply by walking or biking a short distance from the Town Square. Author William Faulkner's Great Grandfather, Col. William Clark Falkner, was a long-time resident of Ripley and is thought to be the source of many of his great grandson's characters.
