ccm_inset1 typewriter ounded by Houston Mitchell and Hamilton Mask in 1854, Corinth, Mississippi, was once billed as the Crossroads of the South because of the importance the city’s railroads played during the Civil War. Those two rail lines which crossed over each other at city center, made Corinth one of the most strategic transportation hubs fought over by both the Union and Confederate armies. Today the Crossroads Museum and Historic Corinth Depot sits only a few feet from railroad tracks that remain busy with frequent traffic from freight trains.

Corinth Crossroads Museum

ccm_state egyptian he Corinth Crossroads Museum inhabits the joint passenger depot in downtown Corinth, Mississippi, the third such structure to sit at this historic junction of two major mainlines in northeastern Mississippi. The original junction dates back to 1857, when the Memphis & Charleston and the Mobile & Ohio railroads intersected at this location. Because of this important junction near the Mississippi-Tennessee state line, control of the town of Corinth was of strategic importance during subsequent battles in the area during Civil War. The current depot served the Southern Railway and the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio until the end of passenger service. Freight traffic across the diamond continues through successors Norfolk Southern and Kansas City Southern, respectively. The V-shaped depot was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, and in 2007 the Corinth Crossroads Museum was opened to feature Civil War artifacts, historic photographs, and industrial items.
