gc_state The Georgia Central Railway operates 211 miles of former Seaboard Coast Line mainline from Macon, Georgia, eastward through Dublin and Vidalia, to the port city of Savannah, Georgia. The mainline is a conglomeration of lines built by a variety of railroads, including the Savannah, Americus & Montgomery and the Macon, Dublin & Savannah. The lines became segments of the Seaboard Air Line and later the larger Seaboard Coast Line. The Georgia Central was first organized in 1990 as a partnership controlled by Rail Management to purchase the line from CSX Transportation, including westward branches from Vidalia to Macon and Rhine. This first iteration of the railroad utilized a fleet of ex Norfolk Southern and CSX General Electric U-boat road power, maintained in Lyons, Georgia. The railroad was acquired by shortline holding company Genesee & Wyoming in 2005. The Vidalia to Rhine branch -- owned by the Georgia Department of Transportation -- was not included in the GW's Georgia Central but was reallocated to the Heart of Georgia shortline. Taking advantage of port traffic in Savannah, commodities moved on the GC include chemicals, farm and food products, fertilizers, forest products, metals, minerals and stone, plastics, and pulp and paper. Interchange is maintained with Norfolk Southern in Macon, sister GW property Heart of Georgia in Vidalia, and CSX Transportation in Savannah. Locomotives are serviced and stored at an enginehouse in Lyons, Georgia.
